When I first got into fitness, it had been a couple of years since my second child was born. I had a lot of extra baby weight still to lose, and my former strength and endurance was pretty much non-existent.

I understood how much becoming a mom turned my life upside-down in pretty much every possible way, but for some reason it didn't click for me right away that once I was a mom, I should also expect my body to have changed in almost every possible way too.

I was a very busy mother of 2, but I also still wanted to feel like myself again. I wanted to feel sexy and confident and I wanted to be able to climb, run, jump and cartwheel with my kids. And I wanted to be able to do those things without everything aching, or feeling like I was going to pee my pants. I wanted to live life without reservations and have my body look and function in a way that supported that rather than prohibiting it.

It finally hit me a couple of years into my fitness journey that maybe the reason I was struggling to see the results on the outside I was working so hard towards, was because there were parts of my body on the inside I couldn't see that needed specially-focused training too. So, I started to do some research into the physiological changes a woman's body undergoes during pregnancy and birth.

I learned that training after having a baby requires a completely different approach than exercise for health or weight loss in general. So, I started to seek out the help of experts and learned everything I could about exercise during and after pregnancy, as well as what caused the common problems pretty much every mom I knew struggled with.

As I applied the concepts I was learning to my own fitness routine, I finally started to notice significant changes in my problem areas. I began to see positive results and changes to issues in my body that I had previously believed were just an unfortunate side effect of becoming a mom that I was destined to live with...

After incorporating workouts and exercises specifically designed to help moms treat postpartum problems such as weakened core and pelvic floor, I began to see years-long issues in my own body heal up and get stronger, even though it had been over 5 years since giving birth!

Because women's bodies undergo a tremendous amount of stress, stretch, and change during pregnancy and birth and oftentimes additional trauma beyond a normal pregnancy and delivery. Regular exercises are not as effective when postpartum dysfunctions are present, and can even make them worse.

With my newfound knowledge on pregnant and postpartum fitness, I was able to maintain my fitness levels during my third and fourth pregnancies, and properly rebuild my core and pelvic floor following birth. My name is Kim Ferrari and I am a personal trainer, pre and postnatal fitness and nutrition specialist, and a mother to four children.

  • q-iconI am 6 weeks postpartum. Is this program suitable for new moms?

    A: While this program is designed for busy moms, I do not recommend this program earlier than 12 weeks postpartum. Most moms have been given approval to return to exercise at 6 weeks, however, your core and pelvic floor are still healing and most of the moves in The S.H.E. Fit Challenge are not safe for diastasis recti. I recommend walking, foundational core, and diastasis friendly exercises for moms earlier than 12 weeks postpartum (as well as those who still have a DR or pelvic floor dysfunction). Our #momsmatter challenge is a great place to begin if you are newly released to exercise or still healing a DR.

  • q-iconIt has been over 10 years since my last baby was born. Can I still benefit from doing this program?

    A: Absolutely! Most moms postpartum (especially those of us who gave birth more than 10 years ago) are not given the time or information they need to properly heal their bodies, especially their deep core and pelvic floor, after giving birth. This program teaches fundamental movements in core restoration, as well as proper breathing and engagement to heal and strengthen our bodies from the inside out. These techniques and practices will help to improve posture, reduce pain, and restore proper function to your body even if a long time has passed since your last pregnancy.
